NHTSA Releases Final Rule on Tire & Cargo Capacity

Wednesday, February 6th @ 8:50 PMpost viewed 173 times

Source: Recreational Vehicle Dealers Association. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has released its final rule on Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards: Cargo Carrying Capacity. This rule addresses RV dealer disclosure obligations when they add “significant” weight to an RV, as explained below.

This revised final rule helps clarify RV dealer compliance obligations, which were vague at best, from its September 2005 rules. Dealers have until June 4, 2008 to comply with the revised rules. Overall, this final rule is beneficial for RV dealers. NHTSA responded to many of RVDA’s suggestions. NHTSA’s final rule now makes one label apply to all towable RVs and a slightly different label applies to all motorized RVs. The previous rule separated RVs into different NHTSA Safety Standards based on a 10,000 lbs Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) threshold.

The rule provides a more reasonable weight threshold before RV dealers need to comply. Any party that adds weight to a Light RV (under 10,000 pounds) exceeding the lesser of 1.5 percent of the vehicle’s GVWR or 100 pounds, or any party adding greater than 100 pounds for a Heavy RV (over 10,000 pounds) before first retail sale to the customer, is required to disclose this extra weight on labels affixed to the vehicles. In addition, the new rule allows dealers to use several different options to comply with the regulation. Dealers adding weight below these thresholds have no disclosure obligations.

RV Experts to be featured

Sunday, February 3rd @ 1:49 PMpost viewed 154 times

We're going to be bringing you RV Experts to the site in a variety of formats to include interviews with ebooks, video and audio presentations.  Of course, you know what an expert is don"t you?

Dr. Laurence J. Peter defined it as:  “Expert: a man who makes three correct guesses consecutively.”  Reminded me of the movie I watched last night on TNT called "Two for the Money" with Al Pacino and Matthew McConaughey.  Matthew played Brandon Lang as a gifted football handicapper.  On one weekend of professional football, he got 14 out of 14 games correct which is prediction.  But the last pick wasn't really based on any knowledge or skill.  He was so confident, that he let one of his co-workers pick the outcome and it was right.  He couldn't fail.  And people flocked to pay for his betting information.

What does that have with the subject of experts?  Well, only that experts provide valuable information and some of it is free and some of it costs something, like getting the right answers on football games.  We won't be interviewing handicappers, but over the next few months, we'll have tons of interviews of experts that will be available to answer your questions through our web and audio chat programs for those who are full members.

We've started a list and if you have a topic or person in mind that you'd like for us to invite or talk about in one of our sessions, let me know.  Our experts section is here and when we get the audio/web chat programs set up on a schedule, you'll be notified through the blog posts.

What kind of guest expert would you like for us to include on our invitation list?
